Full-grain leather upholstery
We source full-grain Italian leather for the Birmingham because it’s the highest grade available—nothing is sanded away or corrected. You’ll see natural grain variations and subtle markings that prove authenticity, and the surface breathes better than bonded or top-grain alternatives.
Each hide is hand-selected and drum-dyed, so color penetrates all the way through the fiber. This means minor scratches blend into the patina rather than exposing a different shade underneath. Over time, the leather softens and develops a warm luster that only improves with age. We offer three finishes: Cognac for a classic honey tone, Espresso for deep richness, and Slate for a modern gray-blue.
Frame construction and joinery
The Birmingham’s skeleton is built from kiln-dried North American hardwood—primarily maple and oak—chosen for dimensional stability. Kiln drying reduces moisture content below 10 percent, which prevents warping and cracking as your home’s humidity changes with the seasons.
We join every corner with mortise-and-tenon joinery, reinforced by corner blocks and wood glue rated for structural applications. No staples or nails hold the primary frame together. The result is a sofa that doesn’t creak or shift when you sit down, even after years of use.
Seat cushions and comfort
Each of the three seat cushions contains a high-density polyurethane foam core—2.0 lb/ft³ density—wrapped in a layer of blown fiber for initial softness. This combination gives you firm support where you need it, with enough surface cushion to feel inviting from the first sit.
We engineer the cushions with a 10-degree front-edge taper, so they compress gradually rather than creating a hard line against the backs of your legs. Seat depth measures 24 inches from the front edge to the backrest, deep enough to sit cross-legged or stretch out, yet proportioned so your feet touch the floor when you’re seated upright.

Birmingham leather sofa questions
Full-grain leather includes the entire thickness of the hide with the natural grain surface intact, showing authentic markings and texture. Top-grain leather has the surface lightly sanded to remove imperfections, then embossed with an artificial grain pattern.
Full-grain is more durable and breathable because the fiber structure remains complete. It develops a richer patina over time, while top-grain tends to look more uniform but won’t age with the same character. We use only full-grain hides for the Birmingham because it’s the longest-lasting option.
Cognac is a warm honey-brown that works well in rooms with wood tones and traditional decor—it’s our most popular finish. Espresso is a deep chocolate brown that anchors contemporary spaces and hides wear in high-traffic homes.
Slate is a modern blue-gray that pairs beautifully with cool neutrals and metal accents. All three finishes are drum-dyed, so color penetrates the entire hide. The Birmingham measures 88 inches wide, but our delivery team can angle it to fit through doorways as narrow as 32 inches. We remove the sofa legs temporarily and protect all edges with moving blankets during installation.
For tight stairwells or elevator access, measure the diagonal clearance at turns—you’ll need at least 36 inches. If your access is more complex, schedule a pre-delivery assessment. We offer hoisting service in most metro areas for second-floor or higher installations.
Our 10-year structural warranty covers the hardwood frame, suspension springs, and joinery against defects in materials or workmanship. It does not cover normal leather aging, patina development, or cushion softening—those are natural characteristics of quality materials used daily.
The warranty also excludes damage from spills, pet scratches, or improper care. Leather and cushion foam have a separate two-year coverage period. Register your Birmingham within 30 days of delivery to activate the full warranty. Full terms are included in your delivery packet.
Yes, we maintain dye lots for each leather finish and can fabricate replacement seat or back cushions for up to 10 years after your original purchase. Replacement seat cushions are priced at $220 each, and back cushions are $140 each.
Because leather ages and develops patina, new cushions will look slightly different than your existing ones until they catch up in tone. We recommend rotating all cushions regularly during the first year to create an even baseline before ordering replacements if needed.
The Birmingham is built to order in our North Carolina workshop, so lead time is typically six to eight weeks from the date you confirm your finish selection. White-glove delivery is included within the continental United States—our crew will unpack, position the sofa, and remove all packaging materials.

We apply a thin protective topcoat during the tanning process that helps resist water-based spills if you blot them quickly. The coating is breathable and won’t crack or peel, but it’s not a permanent stain barrier.
Full-grain aniline leather is prized for its natural look and feel, which means it’s more absorbent than heavily finished leather. Wipe spills immediately with a dry cloth, and avoid placing the sofa in direct contact with denim or fabrics that transfer dye. Our included leather conditioner adds an extra layer of protection when applied seasonally.
