Ottawa Kitchen Cart by Acme Furniture

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

The Ottawa Kitchen Cart transforms any kitchen into a flexible workspace. We designed this rolling cart with a 10-inch-deep solid rubberwood top that handles chopping, rolling, and prep work without warping. Two open shelves store cookware, small appliances, and pantry staples, while a lower drawer keeps utensils and towels organized.

Four locking casters let you roll the cart to your sink, stove, or dining table, then lock it in place when you need a stable surface. The natural wood finish pairs with traditional and farmhouse kitchens, and the compact 36-inch width fits through doorways so you can move it to your patio or dining room when you’re entertaining. Our Ottawa cart ships fully assembled—unbox it, lock the casters, and start cooking.

Materials & Construction

We build the Ottawa Kitchen Cart from solid rubberwood harvested from sustainable plantations. The prep surface is edge-glued and sanded to a smooth finish, then sealed with a food-safe clear coat that resists moisture and staining. Rubberwood is denser than pine and more affordable than maple, giving you a durable work surface that won’t splinter or dent under daily use.

The frame uses mortise-and-tenon joinery at stress points, reinforced with wood glue and steel corner brackets. Each shelf is 10 inches deep and can hold a stand mixer, slow cooker, or stacked mixing bowls without sagging. The metal drawer glides are rated for 5,000 cycles, and the natural wood finish requires only a damp cloth to clean—no special oils or waxes needed.

Casters & Mobility

Four-Wheel Locking System

All four casters on the Ottawa cart lock independently with a foot pedal. Press down to lock, press again to release. The wheels are 2.5 inches in diameter with polyurethane treads that won’t scratch hardwood, tile, or vinyl floors.

When locked, the cart supports up to 50 pounds on the prep surface—enough stability for kneading dough or using a manual pasta roller. When unlocked, the cart rolls smoothly over thresholds and rugs. We recommend locking at least two wheels when moving the cart loaded with appliances to prevent tipping. Our Montana Butcher Block Island uses the same caster system if you need a larger mobile workspace.

Styling

Sizing & Fit

The Ottawa Kitchen Cart measures 36 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 36 inches tall. The prep surface sits at standard kitchen counter height (36 inches), so you can use it as an extension of your existing countertop. The 10-inch depth provides enough space for a cutting board, small appliance, or serving tray without crowding the shelves below.

The cart fits through any standard 32-inch doorway, making it easy to roll between your kitchen, dining room, or outdoor patio. If you have a galley kitchen, the 18-inch depth leaves enough clearance to open cabinets and appliances when the cart is positioned against a wall. For larger kitchens, our Quebec Prep Station offers a 48-inch-wide alternative with the same rubberwood construction.

Perfect for my small kitchen
I was skeptical about the 10-inch depth, but it’s actually ideal for a cutting board and prep bowls. The cart rolls smoothly even when I’ve loaded the shelves with my KitchenAid and pots. Assembly was literally just taking it out of the box. The wood feels solid and the finish is beautiful.

Locks firmly, no wobble
I use this cart for kneading bread dough every weekend. When the casters are locked, it doesn’t budge—totally stable surface. I also love that I can roll it next to the sink when I’m chopping vegetables, then push it back against the wall when I need floor space.

Drawer could be deeper
The cart itself is fantastic—sturdy, easy to move, and the wood top is gorgeous. My only complaint is the drawer is pretty shallow, so I can’t fit my larger serving utensils in there. Everything else about it is perfect for my needs.

Holds my stand mixer with room to spare
I was worried the shelves wouldn’t support my 7-quart stand mixer, but it sits securely on the bottom shelf. The top shelf holds my blender, food processor, and a stack of mixing bowls. The 10-inch-deep top is perfect for rolling out pie dough.

Beautiful natural finish
We have white cabinets and the warm wood tone of the Ottawa cart adds so much character to our kitchen. The grain pattern is gorgeous and the clear coat makes it super easy to wipe down after meal prep. It came fully assembled which saved us so much time.

Rolls outside for summer cookouts
I love that I can unlock the casters and roll this cart straight out to our patio when we’re grilling. It holds all our serving platters, condiments, and utensils. The wheels handle the doorway threshold with no problem and the wood finish looks great outdoors too.

Ottawa Kitchen Cart Questions

The prep surface is 10 inches deep from front to back. This gives you enough space for a standard cutting board, a small appliance like a toaster or blender, or multiple prep bowls without items hanging over the edge. The overall cart depth is 18 inches, which includes the frame and shelves below.

Yes, the Ottawa cart works well as a stationary island when you lock all four casters. The locking mechanism is designed for long-term stability, so you can leave it locked in one spot indefinitely. Many customers use it as a permanent island in small kitchens or apartments where a built-in island isn’t practical.

The top prep surface supports up to 50 pounds, and each open shelf below holds up to 25 pounds evenly distributed. This is enough for a stand mixer, slow cooker, stacked cookware, or pantry staples. Avoid loading one side of a shelf with heavy items, as this can stress the shelf brackets over time.

We include a limited one-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. If a caster, drawer glide, or structural component fails within the first year due to a manufacturing defect, we’ll send you a free replacement part. Normal wear and tear, damage from misuse, or finish changes from sun exposure are not covered.

The Ottawa cart is constructed from solid rubberwood, which comes from rubber tree plantations after they stop producing latex. Rubberwood is denser than pine, resists warping, and has a tight grain that sands to a smooth finish. The natural wood tone ranges from light tan to pale brown with subtle grain variation.

The Ottawa cart uses polyurethane-tread casters that are safe for hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl floors. They won’t leave black marks or scratches under normal use. If you’re moving the cart loaded with heavy appliances, we recommend locking two wheels and pivoting the cart gently to avoid dragging, which can dent floors over time.

Wipe the surface daily with a damp microfiber cloth and a drop of dish soap if needed. Dry immediately after cleaning to prevent water from sitting on the wood. The clear protective coating resists most food stains, but acidic liquids like citrus juice should be wiped up right away. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemicals that can dull the finish.
